If you've ever thought about giving your wedding guests something a little different, something they'll actually keep, this one’s worth reading 😉

Back in February, I had the pleasure of working on one of the most fun (and detail-packed) projects I've taken on: a fully custom illustrated deck of playing cards, designed as a wedding party favour.

That’s right. Every. Single. Card.

How it started

It began with a wedding illustration enquiry. Once that was locked in, the bride came back with another idea and request: could I create something special for her guests to take home? 👀

Her vision was a bespoke set of playing cards, illustrated to reflect her and her fiance’s story, their personalities, their favourite things. Something personal, thoughtful, and genuinely unique.

After a bit of research, we realised there weren’t many options like this out there - especially not something this personalised - so we decided to create something completely bespoke.

What the process looked like

This project had a lot of moving parts, and I loved every bit of it.

The bride put together a brief covering what she wanted featured across the full deck: the Ace, King, Queen, Jack, Joker, and every number card. Each one had its own theme - whether that was outfits, favourite foods, or little personal details that meant something special to the couple.

From there, I created mock-up illustrations for each card and we worked through revisions together, refining the details until everything felt just right. We also spent time on layout and positioning to make sure the deck felt cohesive and balanced as a full set, not just a collection of individual cards.

One of my favourite parts of the project was designing a custom emblem using the couple's initials for the back of every card and on the box, which gave the whole project a really finished, polished feel.

Once the illustrations were approved, I looked for a printer who could handle both the card production and the custom packaging. Finding the right printer took a little patience, but once that piece was in place, the rest came together beautifully.

50+ illustrations later, the deck was complete and sent off to print. Seeing it all come together as a finished product was genuinely one of those ‘ahhh’ moments.

Why custom playing cards work as a wedding favour

Most wedding favours get left on the table or forgotten in a bag, and seen more as a ‘we have to do this’, rather than ‘let’s give our guests something actually meaningful’. A custom illustrated deck of playing cards is something your guests will take home, play with (!), and remember. It's functional, beautiful, and tells a story.

For couples who want their wedding to feel like a true reflection of who they are, this kind of bespoke detail makes a real impression!!

A note on timing

For a project like this, I recommend allowing a minimum of 8 weeks from brief to print.

With 50+ illustrations, multiple rounds of revisions, layout refinements, and print production, there are quite a few stages and moving parts involved. Starting early means the process stays enjoyable rather than stressful, for both of us 😉

If you have a wedding (or any event) coming up and you're interested in exploring fun, out-of-the-box party favours (like this 👀), I’d love to chat.
