Behind The Brush

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from years of live illustration (especially in the wedding world), it’s that success is all in the details. It’s how you communicate with your couples, to the tools you use, to how you bring custom artwork to life. If you’ve been around for a while, you know I’m not one to gatekeep (we can all win)! So I’m going to share a few behind-the-scenes snippets from my own workflow, tools, and sketchbook.

This tip is specific to those in the wedding live illustration space. Organising a wedding can be stressful, and the final few weeks before the big day can be chaotic for couples (been there, done that!), so I like to make sure I’m prepared for all the weddings I have coming up - this is helpful for me and the couple!

At the beginning of every month, I follow up with all my couples getting married in the next month to make sure they’re all good, and to get all the information and any final details I need from them - ie. At the beginning of October, I’ll run through all of my couples in November.

The final few weeks before a wedding are chaotic for couples, and it can be tricky to get a hold of them. The more runway you give them, the better. And for bonus points, take decisions away from them! They’ve made sooo many decisions by this stage, so if you can say something like, “I’ll arrive at this time, I’ll bring everything, see you there,” they’ll love you for it.
